She was honored as Nurse of the Year for her unit two years ago, and often was asked to guide newly hired nurses, said Karen Higdon, the hospital's chief nursing officer. "Dana always put the needs of others before her own and will be greatly missed.” She had also cared for her son, Derek, who was born with cerebral palsy, until she injured her back and could no longer lift him. After reluctantly placing him at Hazelwood Center, she visited him nearly every day. 

Overall, Dana was quiet, but she had a way of getting her point across, her sister said. You didn't mess with her.

ARTIST: ROBERT MARKEY is an artist who has worked in many media over the years  including painting, sculpture, installation, video and mosaics.  He has done public art projects in cities around the country.   He has done mosaic murals in Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Israel, India, Afghanistan & the U.S. He has done painted murals with refugees in the U.S. and Greece, and with tribal painters in India. He currently works out of his studio in Ashfield, Massachusetts and teaches at the Springfield Museum School.
